This bizarre-looking monkey has a bright red face, bald head, and wispy hair. It is the size of a cat. It has a short, stumpy non-prehensile tail and long furry fingers that lack claws. It is arboreal and lives in seasonally flooded forests where Malaria is often prevalent. In this species, a bright red face is a symbol of health while a pale face is a symbol of infection.
The Bald Uakari feeds on seeds, fruits, leaves, nectar, and insects. In the rainy season, it spends most of its time in the forest canopy while in the dry season it comes down to the forest floor to feed on seeds and insects. It can travel up to 4.8 km per day and lives in family groups of up to 30 individuals. The female gives birth to a single offspring every two years.
